Profile overview

• This role sits in the Model Risk Management Group within the Global Risk and Compliance unit of American Express.

• The team oversees models used across the company and reviews whether they meet internal and regulatory quality standards.

• The person joining this position will manage risk around machine learning models including advanced AI and language model related systems that American Express plans to use in the future.

• You will review how the models are created, how they impact business decisions, how they are monitored and how results are interpreted.

• The work includes challenging how the models perform, what assumptions are used and whether the methodology is suitable for real business problems.

• This position requires understanding of predictive modeling, machine learning techniques, probability concepts and coding skills.

• You will carry out testing activities that highlight improvement areas and produce reports that will be shared with stakeholders including leadership members.

• The work will require communication skills, coordination with multiple teams and responsibility to ensure every model brought into the company has a controlled risk structure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor or Master in Data Science, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics or closely related fields.

• Candidates with business degrees such as MBA are also suitable if they possess strong analytical thinking and understanding of quantitative analysis.

• Experience of up to three years in any of these areas is suitable: analytics, modeling, data science, machine learning or model risk management.

• Strong hands on experience working with tools such as Python or R or Java is preferred.

• Exposure to machine learning methods such as decision trees, random forest, gradient boosting, neural networks or reinforcement learning is beneficial.

• Ability to work with structured and unstructured data is important.

• Understanding of developing and validating predictive models is helpful.

• Strong presentation skills are required to share results with business partners and senior management.

• Ability to complete work under short timelines and handle simultaneous projects.

• Confidence to offer constructive feedback where improvements are needed and strong accountability to own tasks throughout completion.
